Vintage Japanese Wise Monkey Figurine: Hear/Speak/See No Evil

Traveling Man Treasures is selling this beautiful little Japanese ceramic sculpture of the three wise monkeys, a Japanese pictorial maxim. The piece is in fair 1960s condition as shown.

In Japanese folklore, the three monkeys are:

Mizaru, who covers his eyes, seeing no evil.

Kikazaru, who covers his ears, hearing no evil.

Iwazaru, who covers his mouth, speaking no evil.

The maxim is often interpreted to mean that one should not receive evil or bad things from their environment. These carvings are often found as netsuke, although this one is a decorative piece.
