This is a rare and unusual antique (c. late 19th century) bronze statue of a Bastar woman from India balancing a bowl on her head. The piece has many spots or wear, but the statue remains solid and will make an excellent display piece!

Bastar is a district in Chhattisgarh, India, where several tribal communities reside, including the Gond, Maria, Muria, Bhadra, Halba, and Dhurua. Women in these communities have traditionally played a vital role in their families, engaging in household work, agriculture, and other forms of livelihood.

Bastar women are often responsible for fetching water, managing household chores, and contributing to family income through various means, including farming, crafting, and trade.
