This is an antique brass Chinese Lohan, often referred to as a "Happy Buddha" (c. 19th century). These figures are typically carved from bamboo or other materials, and are meant to symbolize longevity and prosperity. Based on similar pieces, this figure is potentially from the Ming Dynasty; however, it may be a newer stylistic reproduction.
The statuette's robe is lined with a well-known, and often misunderstood, symbol. In Chinese culture, the "卍" (wàn), is a sacred symbol with positive connotations and is not associated with hate or violence. It represents good fortune, prosperity, and boundless longevity. In Chinese, the swastika is also a homophone for the word meaning "ten thousand," an auspicious number. It's a standard character in Chinese script and is used in various East Asian languages.
