Vintage Hand-Made Thai Sword (Dha/Daab) with Wood Scabbard
Vintage Hand-Made Thai Sword (Dha/Daab) with Wood Scabbard
"Dha" is the Burmese word for this single edge sword, Thailand uses "Daab," although Dha is the conventional word to refer to similar knives and swords used by people across Southeast Asia, including Myanmar, Thailand, Yunnan, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
This particular Dha was considered a "tourist sword." Made during the 1960s-1970s, these swords were meant to be sold to American soldiers as souvenirs of their experience, the "S" shaped markings are a key indicator to this date and make. This Dha/Daab is in good vintage shape with minimal nicks & dings, and will make an excellent display piece.
Dha/Daab can vary considerably according to locality but they share a few features that define them apart from other weapons and tools of the area. These features are a round cross-section grip, a long, gently curving blade with a single edge, and no guard.
