Antique Cloisonné Matchbox Holder & Ashtray | China (c. 1890-1910)

This is a delicate little cloisonné matchbox holder and ashtray set with a yellow-base enamel cherry blossom design. The pair are in good antique condition with minimal surface wear consistent with age, and can be used as a functional set or as a beautiful Asian decor addition to any room.

Making these items is a very labor-intensive process, as every piece is a unique miniature work of art. Pieces fall into categories by background color or theme. The back & front of the matchboxes are usually similar, but some pieces are hybrid variations (such as this one). Most cloisonné sets are often brightly colored with floral themes. Craftsmanship varies widely, from large crude cloisonnés to extremely small finely detailed cloisonnés.
