This is a 19th century Japanese bronze statue of Miroku Bosatsu, also known as Maitreya Bodhisattva. He is a figure of great importance in Japanese Buddhism. Considered the future Buddha, and was prophesied to be the next Buddha to be born on earth after Gautama Buddha. Currently, Miroku resides in Tushita heaven and is depicted as a bodhisattva, awaiting his descent to Earth.
