This is a finely sewn vintage Mola textile, a traditional art form of the indigenous Guna people of Panama. Decorated with a colorful bird on a branch surrounded by flowers, the piece is in excellent condition and ready to be displayed!
Molas are a significant part of Guna women's traditional clothing, particularly as panels on their blouses, and are considered a strong marker of Guna cultural identity.
Molas are created using a reverse appliqué technique, where layers of different colored fabric are sewn together, and designs are cut into the top layers to reveal the colors beneath. Their designs can range from traditional geometric patterns derived from ancient body painting to more contemporary themes inspired by daily life, animals, plants, and even popular culture.
